SSI and BiSS-C Absolute Encoders

Compare SSI and BiSS-C absolute encoder feedback by clocking, data format, resolution, update behavior and controller compatibility.

DIRECT ANSWER

SSI and BiSS-C are synchronous serial interfaces used for deterministic absolute position feedback. The controller supplies a clock and the encoder returns a digital position word. They are not automatically interchangeable: clock rate, frame format, bit length, coding, error fields, electrical level and controller support must all match.

SELECTION TABLE

SSI and BiSS-C integration differences

Use this table as an initial engineering checklist. Final model configuration must be confirmed against the controller, mechanical drawing and operating environment.

Interface pointWhat to confirm
Clock and dataSupported clock frequency, electrical level, cable length and termination
Position wordSingle-turn bits, multi-turn bits, binary or Gray coding and bit order
Frame behaviorSSI timing or BiSS-C frame, status and error fields supported by the controller
MechanicsShaft, flange, housing, connector, speed and environmental rating

ENGINEERING PROCESS

How to select the right configuration

  1. 01

Identify the exact controller or drive interface specification.

  2. 02

Define required single-turn resolution and multi-turn range.

  3. 03

Match clock, data format, coding and electrical level.

  4. 04

Approve the mechanical drawing, wiring and complete model suffix.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Can an SSI encoder replace a BiSS-C encoder?

Not without checking the controller. Both are clocked serial interfaces, but their frame behavior and supported features differ.

What does encoder bit length mean?

It defines how many digital values are available for the measured position. Multi-turn devices can specify separate within-turn and turn-count fields.

Is Gray code required for SSI?

Some SSI systems use Gray code and others use binary. The encoder output and controller decoding must match.

EDITORIAL SCOPE

How this guidance is prepared

FOSAI consolidates available supplier technical material into a buyer-oriented selection guide. Parameters, certifications and compatibility are not generalized across every model; the final suffix, controlled drawing and project conditions must be confirmed before ordering.
