Encoder selection guide

Single-turn or multi-turn absolute encoder?

Choose between one-revolution angle feedback and retained position across multiple shaft turns.

DIRECT ANSWER

A single-turn absolute encoder identifies the shaft angle within one revolution. A multi-turn absolute encoder also tracks the number of completed revolutions, allowing a controller to determine position across a longer mechanical range. Choose multi-turn when the measured axis can move through multiple revolutions and must retain that position after power loss.

Single-turn measures position within 360°Multi-turn adds completed-turn informationTurn range must cover the full mechanical travelRetention method must be confirmed by encoder design

SELECTION TABLE

Single-turn and multi-turn comparison

Use this table as an initial engineering checklist. Final model configuration must be confirmed against the controller, mechanical drawing and operating environment.

Single-turnMulti-turn
Angle repeats after each revolutionReports angle plus revolution count
Suitable for one-revolution mechanismsSuitable for winches, screws, long axes and geared motion
Specified mainly by bits per revolutionSpecified by single-turn bits plus turn range or multi-turn bits
Simpler selectionRequires checking turn overflow and retention technology

ENGINEERING PROCESS

How to select the right configuration

  1. 01

Calculate the maximum number of encoder shaft turns across full machine travel.

  2. 02

Include gearing, safety margin and possible overtravel.

  3. 03

Define required angle resolution within each turn.

  4. 04

Confirm how multi-turn position is retained and how overflow is handled.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Can a single-turn encoder measure more than 360 degrees?

Its reported absolute angle repeats after each revolution. A controller can count turns while powered, but that is not the same as a multi-turn encoder that retains revolution information.

How many turns should a multi-turn encoder support?

The range must exceed the maximum encoder shaft revolutions across the machine travel, including gearing, setup movement and a suitable overtravel margin.

Are all multi-turn encoders battery powered?

No. Multi-turn technologies include mechanical geared counting and other designs. Confirm the retention principle and maintenance requirements for the selected model.

How this guidance is prepared

FOSAI consolidates available supplier technical material into a buyer-oriented selection guide. Parameters, certifications and compatibility are not generalized across every model; the final suffix, controlled drawing and project conditions must be confirmed before ordering.
