RS485 Modbus RTU Absolute Encoders

Select RS485 Modbus RTU absolute encoders by turn range, resolution, register format, shaft, flange and environmental protection.

DIRECT ANSWER

An RS485 Modbus RTU absolute encoder reports a digital position value over a noise-resistant differential bus. It is a practical choice when a PLC or industrial controller needs absolute angle or turn data, configurable addressing and longer cable runs. Final selection must match the controller register map, supply, baud rate and mechanical installation.

SELECTION TABLE

RS485 encoder information to confirm

Use this table as an initial engineering checklist. Final model configuration must be confirmed against the controller, mechanical drawing and operating environment.

Selection itemWhat to verify
CommunicationModbus RTU or supplier-specific RS485; address, baud rate, parity and register order
MeasurementSingle-turn angle or multi-turn position; required resolution and turn range
MechanicalHousing diameter, solid or blind-hollow shaft, flange and connector direction
EnvironmentTemperature, vibration, water exposure and required protection rating

ENGINEERING PROCESS

How to select the right configuration

  1. 01

Send the existing model, label photo or controller requirement.

  2. 02

Confirm resolution, turn range and whether position must survive power loss.

  3. 03

Match Modbus settings, register format, supply and wiring.

  4. 04

Approve the shaft, flange, cable exit and controlled drawing before quotation.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Does an RS485 encoder always use Modbus RTU?

No. RS485 defines the electrical layer, while Modbus RTU is one possible protocol. Confirm the protocol and register mapping before replacement.

Can an RS485 absolute encoder retain position after power loss?

Single-turn absolute position is retained by the sensing technology. Multi-turn retention depends on the encoder design, such as mechanical turn counting or another specified method.

What causes an RS485 replacement encoder to show the wrong value?

Common causes include register byte order, scaling, counting direction, preset value, baud rate, address and wiring polarity mismatches.

How this guidance is prepared

FOSAI consolidates available supplier technical material into a buyer-oriented selection guide. Parameters, certifications and compatibility are not generalized across every model; the final suffix, controlled drawing and project conditions must be confirmed before ordering.
