Encoders for Washdown Production Lines

Select IP68 encoders for conveyors, indexing, rollers and position feedback in wet and regularly cleaned production areas.

01 · THE MACHINE

Cleaning conditions are part of the sensor specification.

Conveyors, indexing stations, rollers and format adjustments may need different feedback. Document whether the line sees rinse water, pressure jets, hot water or cleaning chemicals before selecting the enclosure.

In plain termsFirst identify the movement the controller needs to know. Only then choose the encoder.

02 · WHAT TO MEASURE

Seal the complete installation—not only the encoder body.

The shaft interface, cable gland, connector direction and nearby surfaces all affect washdown reliability. Cleaning pressure, temperature and chemistry remain project-specific checks.

03 · RECOMMENDED PRODUCT

RS485 Modbus RTU IP68 Waterproof Absolute Encoder

IP68 is a starting point—not a complete washdown statement.

Select incremental feedback for speed or length and absolute feedback for retained position. Then verify stainless materials, seals, connector orientation, wash pressure and chemical compatibility.

04 · HOW IT WORKS

From machine movement to a control decision.

The encoder closes the information gap between a moving production line and the PLC.

WHAT THE SENSOR DOES

Incremental pulses can represent conveyor speed and travelled length. Absolute feedback can represent indexed stations and retained format positions. The controller converts the selected signal into the machine value used by its motion sequence.

THE CUSTOMER'S GOAL

What the system must achieve

Preserve accurate speed or position feedback through repetitive operation and cleaning without allowing water, chemistry or cabling to become the weak point.

THE FOSAI CONFIGURATION

How we select the sensor

Choose incremental or absolute feedback from the control task, calculate the required resolution, and match the electrical input. Then document wash pressure, temperature, chemicals, connector orientation and stainless material requirements.

05 · EXPECTED RESULT

What improves after the correct feedback is installed.

Repeatable line positioning
Stable speed feedback
Faster changeover recovery
Cleaning-aware specification

ENGINEERING PROCESS

How to select the right configuration

  1. 01

Define whether the controller needs speed, length or absolute position.

  2. 02

Calculate PPR or bit resolution from the machine mechanics.

  3. 03

Match the output circuit or protocol and maximum update requirement.

  4. 04

Document wash pressure, temperature, chemistry, frequency, cable routing and connector sealing.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is an IP68 encoder safe for high-pressure washdown?

Not automatically. IP68 and high-pressure jet resistance are different conditions; confirm pressure, temperature, distance, cleaning cycle and all sealing interfaces.

Should a conveyor use absolute or incremental feedback?

Incremental feedback is common for speed and length. Absolute feedback is useful for indexed axes or retained changeover positions.

Why is stainless steel important?

It can improve corrosion resistance and cleanability, but the complete installation—including shaft, fasteners, coupling, connector and cable—must be compatible with the cleaning environment.

EDITORIAL SCOPE

How this guidance is prepared

FOSAI consolidates available supplier technical material into a buyer-oriented selection guide. Parameters, certifications and compatibility are not generalized across every model; the final suffix, controlled drawing and project conditions must be confirmed before ordering.
