Multi-turn Absolute Encoders

Select multi-turn absolute encoders by retained turn range, within-turn resolution, interface and mechanical travel.

CATEGORY OVERVIEW

A multi-turn absolute encoder reports both the angular position within one revolution and the number of completed revolutions. It is used for winches, screws, long axes and geared motion that must retain position across multiple turns. Required turn capacity, overflow behavior and retention technology must be confirmed.

SELECTION CHECKLIST

Compare the requirement before the model.

01

Turn range

Calculate total encoder-shaft revolutions including gearing, setup movement and overtravel.

02

Within-turn resolution

Define the smallest angular or linear movement the controller must distinguish.

03

Retention

Confirm mechanical, electronic or other specified multi-turn retention behavior.

04

Data format

Match turn count, position scaling, register or frame layout and controller limits.

CATEGORY QUESTIONS

Before choosing this category

How many turns should I select?

Choose a range greater than the maximum possible encoder-shaft turns, including a suitable overtravel margin.

Are multi-turn encoders always battery powered?

No. Designs include mechanical geared counting and other technologies; verify the specific model principle.
