CATEGORY OVERVIEW
An incremental rotary encoder outputs pulses as the shaft moves. A and B channels provide movement and direction; an optional Z channel provides a reference event. It is effective for speed, counting and relative position when the controller can establish a reference and process the required pulse frequency.

Can an incremental encoder report position after power loss?
The encoder reports movement, not a retained absolute value. The control system normally needs a reference or retained count.
Why are A and B phase shifted?
The phase relationship lets the controller determine direction and enables quadrature counting.
